Egyptian investigators say they have recovered the flight data recorders from the EgyptAir flight that crashed in the Mediterranean Sea last month. The discovery comes one day after Egypt’s Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Committee found the cockpit voice recorder. The airplane crash lawyers at Bohrer & Lukeman have been closely following the updates regarding the incident.

The discovery could be a breakthrough in determining what caused the plane to crash into the sea towards the end of its flight from Paris to Cairo on May 19. Since the May crash, the plane crash lawyers at Bohrer & Lukeman have been performing their own review of the crash. The accident resulted in the deaths of all 66 people onboard.

According to the New York Times, a research vessel by the name of John Lethbridge found the wreckage of the plane as well as the cockpit voice and the flight data recorders.

“The vessel equipment managed to pick up the memory unit, which is considered as the most important part of the above-mentioned recorder,” according to the Egyptian Aircraft Accident Investigation Committee.

While the data recorders were damaged during the plane crash, experts think that crucial information can still be extracted from the black boxes. The devices have been sent to Alexandria, Egypt.

Egyptian investigators are now deciding what to do with them. Authorities are considering sending the memory units abroad to be repaired.

“The experts on the Egyptian Aircraft Accident Investigation Committee will determine today if the black box memory units need to be sent abroad, in which case it will be for 24 hours under Egyptian supervision,” Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy said.

The black boxes – as the flight data recorders are colloquially referred to – gather about 25 hours of technical data from the airplane’s sensors, according to CNN. The recording devices are able to record thousands of unique pieces of information such as the plane’s altitude, airspeed, engine performance, and even the wing positions.
