The pilot of the ill fated Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 which took off from Beirut in thunderstorms flew in the opposite direction from the path recommended by air traffic control.

The airplane crashed into the sea in flames moments after take-off apparently killing all 90 people on board.

The pilot at first seemed to follow the tower’s guidance, but then abruptly changed course and went in the opposite direction.

“They asked him to correct his path but he did a very fast and strange turn before disappearing completely from the radar,” said a government official.

As of Wednesday, it was still unknown as to why the pilot veered off the recommended flight path.
