NY Thruway Crash Injures 17
Seventeen people were hurt in a crash on the Thruway Wednesday morning around 4:30 a.m.
It happened in the eastbound lanes near the Manchester exit, Exit 43. State Police say the box of a dump truck driven by John Hoey, 49 of Oswego hit the bottom of the County Road 7 bridge on the Thruway. The impact caused the dumpster of the truck to detach from the truck, and it ended up in the driving lane, where it was struck by a van, driven by Max Itzkowitz, 47 of Brooklyn. There were 2 adults and 8 children in that vehicle. Two of the children in the van were airlifted to Strong Hospital by Mercy Flight.
An SUV with seven people inside also struck the box of the truck. That SUV was driven by Yosef Compton, 31, of Springfield, N.J. and contained 3 adults and 4 children. All of the other occupants were taken to Rochester area hospitals by ambulances.
The impact of the crash damaged the overpass on County Road 7. It was temporarily closed for inspection.
“They will do X-rays, they will do more measurements, and they might do some load testing on it,” said Bill Wright, of Ontario County Public Works. “They will do some different things to access what they need to do to repair it, but they will repair that beam.”
The crash closed the thruway between exits 43 and 42 for about five hours. It is now reopened.
